The next morning, while it was still practically dark outside, Junu dragged me out of the apartment and out to his bike. We’d packed food and water last night, and we didn’t bother to shower before we left in the morning. It was just up and out in under five minutes. I think it was a record for me.

Junu said it would take about four hours to get to Mount Jirisan, which should give us a few hours in the park to search for a dogwood tree that still had some blossoms on it. I had a plastic container in my bag that should hold the flower without damaging any of its petals—if I could find one. Junu didn’t think we would, but I had no choice but to hold out hope. I couldn’t imagine Master Yi giving us a quest we couldn’t complete. What would be the point in that?

“I’m just saying, if it were that easy to level up an imugi, the world would be full of dragons, right? Have you ever seen a dragon?” Junu said when we stopped to stretch our legs. They were his first words when he took off his helmet, as if no time at all had passed between our conversation last night and now.

“Let’s not argue anymore.” I hooked my arm through his and walked with him into the little house that doubled as a gas station and noodle house. Things were so different here in Korea. It was like living in the Wild West while also living in Utopia. Such a dichotomy of the old and new. “All we can do is try our best, right? Let’s just go in with a positive attitude, with the expectation that we’ll find what we’re looking for—and maybe it’ll come true.”

“Aren’t American’s all into that? What do they call it? Manifesting?”

I laughed. “Yeah, I guess it’s a popular belief. But there is scientific proof that suggests that if you expect something to be true, it’s more likely to be true. Like, did you know that if you were playing on a game show where you had to choose between say, doors 1, 2, and 3—that if you always went with your first instinct, you’re far more likely to win, than if you second-guess yourself? I can’t remember the exact statistic, but it’s significant.”

Junu ordered us each a couple bowls of noodles and two cups of tea, then he rolled his eyes at me. “That can’t be true.”

“It is. I swear. You can look it up if you want to. Anyway, my point is, there’s no harm in us trying. And expecting a bad outcome is only going to make us have a bad day. I’d rather have a great day and fail, than have a bad day and fail. That would be like adding insult to injury. Wouldn’t you?”

The lady brought our food to one of two tiny tables in front of the windows and Junu and I sat down. He sighed. “I guess you’re right.
